Area conversions trip people up because the factors are squared. A metre is about 3.28 feet, so it is tempting to assume a square metre is about 3.28 square feet. It is not — it is 3.28 × 3.28, or roughly 10.76 square feet. Every factor in the table below already accounts for that.

The two land units worth memorising: an acre is 43,560 square feet (exactly 4046.8564224 m²), and a hectare is a clean 10,000 m², which makes it about 2.47 acres.

Convert without a browser

This page needs a connection. The CalcBoard app does the same conversions offline, with exact decimal arithmetic, and puts the converter next to a working calculator — so you can convert a measurement in one panel and immediately use it in a formula in the next, without copying anything by hand.

Free vs. Premium, honestly: the free app includes 2 panels, basic mode, 3 converter categories, and your last 10 history entries — no ads, no time limits. A one-time $2.99 purchase (no subscription) unlocks scientific and programmer modes, up to 8 panels, the shared value tray, all 10 converter categories, full history with search and CSV export, and all themes and button styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet, which is 4046.8564224 square metres. An American football field, excluding the end zones, is very close to 1.1 acres.
How big is a hectare compared with an acre?
A hectare is 10,000 square metres, or about 2.4710538 acres. Put the other way, an acre is about 0.4047 hectares.
Why can't I just use the length factor twice?
You can — that is exactly what a squared factor is. One foot is 0.3048 m, so one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m². The mistake is applying the length factor once instead of twice.
