Data Storage Converter
Bytes through petabytes — and the binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) that explain why your new drive looks smaller than the box said.
Download CalcBoard FreeThis is the conversion category with an actual disagreement baked into it. A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes — decimal, powers of ten. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — binary, powers of two. They are about 7.4% apart, and both are correct within their own convention.
That gap is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as roughly 931 GB in your operating system. The manufacturer sold you 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (a real terabyte) and the OS is reporting them in tebibytes while labelling the result “GB”. Nobody is lying; the two are just counting in different bases. CalcBoard lists both families separately so you can see the difference rather than guess at it.

This page’s converter uses ordinary JavaScript numbers, so long results round like any web calculator. CalcBoard’s in-app converter uses exact decimal arithmetic and works with no connection at all.

Convert without a browser
This page needs a connection. The CalcBoard app does the same conversions offline, with exact decimal arithmetic, and puts the converter next to a working calculator — so you can convert a measurement in one panel and immediately use it in a formula in the next, without copying anything by hand.
