This is the conversion category with an actual disagreement baked into it. A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes — decimal, powers of ten. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes — binary, powers of two. They are about 7.4% apart, and both are correct within their own convention.

That gap is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as roughly 931 GB in your operating system. The manufacturer sold you 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (a real terabyte) and the OS is reporting them in tebibytes while labelling the result “GB”. Nobody is lying; the two are just counting in different bases. CalcBoard lists both families separately so you can see the difference rather than guess at it.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?
A GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal). A GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes (binary, 2³⁰). A GiB is about 7.4% larger. Storage makers use GB; most operating systems report GiB, sometimes while writing 'GB' on screen.
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
Because the drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes — a real decimal terabyte — and the operating system is dividing by 1024 three times, giving about 931 of what it labels GB but are really GiB. No space is missing.
Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?
Both conventions are in use. The IEC standard reserves KB for 1000 bytes and KiB for 1024. This converter follows that standard and includes both, so you can convert either way explicitly.
