Speed is where a driving holiday, a weather forecast, and a physics problem all use different units for the same thing. The conversions below run through metres per second, the SI base, which is also the unit most formulas expect.

Two shortcuts worth carrying: mph × 1.6 is close enough to km/h for road signs (the exact factor is 1.609344), and a knot is roughly 1.15 mph — one nautical mile per hour. For physics, dividing km/h by 3.6 gives m/s exactly.

Convert without a browser

This page needs a connection. The CalcBoard app does the same conversions offline, with exact decimal arithmetic, and puts the converter next to a working calculator — so you can convert a measurement in one panel and immediately use it in a formula in the next, without copying anything by hand.

Free vs. Premium, honestly: the free app includes 2 panels, basic mode, 3 converter categories, and your last 10 history entries — no ads, no time limits. A one-time $2.99 purchase (no subscription) unlocks scientific and programmer modes, up to 8 panels, the shared value tray, all 10 converter categories, full history with search and CSV export, and all themes and button styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply by 1.609344. So 60 mph is 96.56 km/h and 70 mph is 112.65 km/h. To go the other way, divide by 1.609344 — or multiply by about 0.6214.
What is a knot?
One nautical mile per hour, which is 1852 metres per hour or about 0.5144 metres per second. It is standard for shipping and aviation because it maps directly onto latitude.
How do I convert km/h to m/s?
Divide by 3.6. That comes from 1000 metres per kilometre divided by 3600 seconds per hour, so it is exact — 90 km/h is exactly 25 m/s.
