Worth knowing: + and × are bound on the numeric keypad only. On the main row those characters need Shift (Shift + = and Shift + 8), which CalcBoard does not currently bind — so on a keyboard with no numeric keypad, use the on-screen buttons for those two operators. and / need no Shift and work everywhere.

Where the keyboard works

  • iPad with a Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or any Bluetooth keyboard.
  • Apple Silicon Macs, where CalcBoard runs as an iPad app — see the Mac page.
  • iPhone with a paired Bluetooth keyboard, though it is a less common setup.

Keys go to the active panel. In a multi-panel layout, tap a panel to focus it, then type.

A fast workflow

With a numeric keypad, CalcBoard becomes close to a desktop ten-key: type the expression, press Enter, read the result. Because the whole expression stays visible and editable rather than being consumed key by key, you can correct a mistyped digit with Backspace instead of starting over — and undo goes back up to 50 steps.

What is not bound

Being explicit, since guessing wastes time: there are no modifier-key shortcuts. No Cmd + C to copy a result, no shortcut to add a panel, switch panels, change mode, or open history — those are on-screen actions. There are no letter-key bindings either, so scientific functions and hex digits A–F are tapped rather than typed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use CalcBoard with a hardware keyboard?
Yes — on iPad with a Magic Keyboard or any Bluetooth keyboard, on Apple Silicon Macs, and on iPhone with a paired keyboard. Digits, decimal point, operators, parentheses, Enter, Backspace and Escape are all bound.
Why doesn't the plus key work?
Plus and multiply are bound on the numeric keypad only. On the main row they require Shift, which CalcBoard does not currently bind — use the on-screen buttons, or a keyboard with a numeric keypad. Minus and slash work everywhere.
Which key evaluates the expression?
Enter, Return, the numeric keypad's Enter, or the = key. Escape clears everything and Backspace deletes the last character.
Are there shortcuts for switching panels or modes?
No. There are no modifier-key shortcuts in CalcBoard — adding panels, switching panels, changing mode, and opening history are on-screen actions. Typing goes to whichever panel is active.
